Age is another glaring factor, fertility decreases as a woman gets older. This is because age related changes in the ovaries cause a decline in the quantity and quality of eggs. Ageing attracts health related problems such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis and blockage of Fallopian tube which leads to loss of fertility. Gradual fertility decline in women begins in their 30’s, worsens after age 37 and goes downhill after age 40. This decline means that it might take longer to get pregnant.
Smoking and drinking can lead to fertility problems in both men and women. Chemicals found in cigarette smoke such as nicotine and carbon monoxide speed up the loss rate of a woman’s egg. It is also advisable for women to stay away from second hand smoke and recreational drugs. Alcohol should also be avoided.
Also, partners should consider having an infertility evaluation, if the woman is 35 years old or older and hasn’t become pregnant after six months of trying to conceive without birth control.
